The Trays @ IKEA Restaurant..

Have changed! I noticed yesterday while running an errand.

Below, old vs. new..

How's that for consistency.. haha. Anyhow it became a lot wider but has the same depth (important to be able to still fit in those tray stacking carts when you're done). Also gone are the gray stripes, the IKEA type now in lime green.

Like Bento Boxes I like food trays for their friendly Radiused Corners. Totally blog worthy. ;)

IKEA's Swedish meatballs. I can't eat them all the time but relatively speaking I've always been a fan. It's been a while since they stopped calling it the "Manager's Special" but, the 15-piece meatball plate (with mashed potatoes, lingonberry preserve and "cream sauce") is now only $3.99.(!) I paid an extra buck for five more to make it a nice round number of twenty.

And I still eat them with a spoon for optimal gravy-to-meatball ratio.

My co-worker's meal.

I've been asked about where to get mac-n-cheese in this town more than once this week. She's pregnant. ;)

Anyhow I wonder what they did with the old trays?? I want one! Or three...

lol i don't get the correlation between being pregnant and the items on the tray?

i got some stuf at ikea a few months ago when i moved up here...the food was pretty cheap. i think i got some veggie wrap and some tomato soup...not bad for the price and i enjoyed the berry soda thing. never had their meatballs though although im craving some now. ...

Hi K&S, gosh I'd love to visit the restaurant at IKEA Osaka.. :)

Hi Sawyer, haha, yeah it was kind of an inside joke since the coworker had been craving (and talking) mac-n-cheese all week. I picked up some gnarly stuff at the grocer down stairs in the past (couldn't resist the cute packaging), but overall the food is decent, you know, for a furniture store.. ;)

I actually like the one in Kobe better because it is closer to the station than the one in Osaka :)

I've always found the odd aesthetic of Ikea meatballs to be compelling: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaszeta/3199418480/

I like the new trays! The old ones kind of reminded me of prison jumpsuits... I love IKEA. My friend and I used to go there a lot just to eat the swedish meatballs. I think its about time for another visit.

I never jumped on the Ikea Meatball bandwagon. I think i tried the meatballs once and thought 'meh'. But maybe I was having a bad tastebud or something b/c I'm pretty sure the entire world, except for me, thinks the meatballs are crazy good.

How do they sell them for so cheap? What makes them so good - is it the meat they use?

I'm going to try to make it there soon to try em out!

Nice post :)

Hi K&S, they stopped giving out plastic bags here BTW.. If you don't have a bag you brought with, they sell durable reusable ones (similar to what's used in the store but blue instead of yellow). Either that or carry your stuff out by by hand.(!)

Hi Kaszeta, great pic! I wouldn't expect less from you.. :) The soft meatballs have the right amount of sodium don't they, probably full of fat too. ;)

Hi Mary, I like the new trays too. I'd just like to keep one or two of the old if they're throwing them out.. I used to come way too often here myself. My collection of all the meal photos are too daunting to tackle at the moment.. It's not like there aren't enough people who blogged about it already but one day I'm going to do it. :)

Hi CC, haha glad you enjoyed the post. You know I was amazed at how the two old vs. new photo matched up almost exactly, haha. Twenty of these mb's are easy. I wished they gave a little more mashed potatoes though.. :)

Hi Fliu, as for the meatballs here I think you either like them or you don't. Most probably associate the meal with some pleasant memories of shopping with friends or that first futon sofa they bought in college, haha. I'm not exactly sure what's in them but I bet they are pretty fatty.

Wow, 20 meatballs. I think I've only been able to eat about 10 of them with mash potatoes. I always wished I had more gravy since I love to drench the mash potatoes with it. I think the meatballs are pretty decent. I mean it's Ikea Swedish Meatballs for cheap! hehe.

Hi CAB, aw 20 of these small meatballs are easy for a dude, haha. ;) They're generous with extra gravy if you ask. I just always forget to.

LOl, I love that you blogged about the trays. I have yet to try the meatballs there, though I've been wanting to. It's been so long since I've been to Ikea. I don't let myself go cuz I always get sucked in and by stuff I don't need. I do need to make a visit soon though...

Hi Kirbie the meatballs are definitely not something to go out of your way for.. But I had them for so long that when I think of Ikea I immediately think of them. :)
